Winning Words

"We were delighted with the work that Ummo did for us. They were part of the project team from the outset, making suggestions and pushing the work forward within a tight timeframe. The site exceeded our expectations and Ummo were excellent at providing training and support for our clients. "

— Michael Smith, Director Cog Design

Winning Words

Winning Words is a national initiative conceived by William Sieghart, founder of National Poetry Day, that aims to celebrate and promote poetry in the run up to the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic games. Working for Cog Design we were asked to assist with the wireframes and recommend a CMS for a responsive content driven site that could be easily updated with the latest news, events and competitions in the lead up to the games.

Once the site had been taken through the design phase by Cog Design we converted the layouts into code using HTML5 and CSS3 on a Wordpress platform. We created several custom functions including a “Poem of the day” feature that selected poems from the large database from within the site. We built the site on a flexible grid that allowed the design to respond to various devices. And using Wordpress as a CMS allowed the site to be easily managed via a customised admin panel.

Winning words responsive views

The Winning Words website also takes advantage of progressive enhancement techniques and javascript to provide an enriched experience for users of modern web browsers whilst still allowing the content to be accessed with older browsers.

What we did

  • Responsive web design
  • Wordpress as CMS
  • Customised admin system
